Business Membership

"I suggest you join GET, a consumer advocacy group for all things green in the GTA. The membership cost is low considering all the benefits: website listing, great business seminars for a great price, networking etc etc. We have received a few leads because we are listed on the website."
—Christine Lolley B.E.S. M.ARCH, Solares Design Build Inc.

The Local Living Economy—It's a better party!

Special thanks to OurFaves.com for bringing a great group of favers to mix it up with GET entrepreneurs and local PEN Canada writers.

First Annual “I GET T.O.” Party

Wednesday April 30, 2008
7:30-12 pm
The Gladstone Hotel Ballroom, 1214 Queen Street West
at the corner of Gladstone Avenue and Queen Street just east of Dufferin Street

Tickets VISA/MC call 416-644-1012 $25 at the door.
Ticket sales revenue will cover the cost of the event (this is not a fundraiser).

Co-sponsored with PEN Canada
and Steamwhistle Brewery

The event will feature a very sultry, spring fever-inducing jazz quartet, as well as the Toronto Morris Men, performing for May Day. Fine food from the local-sustainable Gladstone kitchen, and guest speaker Katherine Govier.

Local literary hero Katherine Govier will explore the spirit of place that animates the many faces of Toronto. Katherine will read from Fables of Brunswick Avenue, which has just been published in a new edition.

This event is one of many festivities celebrating Jane Jacobs' legacy. Mayor David Miller has declared Jane's birthday, May 4, Jane Jacobs Day, which he will announce at the launch of this year's Jane's Walk in East Scarborough. The weekend of May 3 and 4 is Jane's Walk, a series of free neighbourhood strolls that reinforce her idea of walkable, dense and diverse neighbourhoods as the hallmarks of a healthy city.

Jane Jacobs' work is a cornerstone of the local living economy movement, and GET is the local network of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies. For more on the link between BALLE and Jane Jacobs' work, read BALLE co-founder Judy Wicks' essay about Jane, and view her on video.

The location is the historic Gladstone Hotel, a lovely icon of the local which is a sustaining member of GET and deeply committed to local living economy values:

  • strong communities
  • a healthy environment
  • meaningful employment
  • buying local first
  • fair trade

PEN Canada works on behalf of writers, at home and abroad, who have been forced into silence for writing the truth as they see it.
